Acupuncture has been used to effectively treat back pain for centuries. In fact acupuncture succeeds at relieving back pain and sciatica pain when most other types of treatments and therapies fail to provide pain relief.
In my 21 years of practice I have found acupuncture to be almost a miracle cure.
The only problem is that most people are afraid of the acupuncture needles. This fear of needles usually prevents people from experiencing the pain relief benefits of acupuncture.
Acupuncture's pain relief benefits can be achieved without the use of needles.
In fact centuries ago the original developers of acupuncture did not use needles.
They used their fingers to apply pressure to specific points on the body to obtain pain relief. So the original treatments were primarily acupressure.
It really does not matter if you use your fingertips, needles, or breakthrough treatment technologies like electric micro-current, derma-ray of electric therapy or modern day light and laser therapy to stimulate these acupuncture points. Just as long as you stimulate these points your pain should go away.
Personally in my 21 years of practice I found that the modern day technologies and treatments of laser and light therapy and micro-current and derma ray therapy work better than the feared needle treatments and acupressure.
That is why in my office we use laser and light therapy, micro-current therapy and derma ray therapy instead of needles. Our patients get pain relief from the use of these treatments when other methods have failed to help them.

I have been getting terrific results for getting rid of pain from disc herniations with our new spinal decompression table. There is debate within the fibromyalgia community whether or not a total of 11 out of 18 points must test positive in order to be given a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. I treat severe fibromyalgia patients every day, day in and day out, and my feeling on whether 11 points must test positive is "who cares?" Fibromyalgia is a name, a label so to speak, that many doctors put on patients because they don't understand why they have widespread pain all over the body. In reality when looking at tender points you are only measuring the symptoms but ignoring the cause, which is central nervous system dysfunction.
